Democracy will win every time

Montgomeryshire’s MP and MS have jointly hailed the success of a face-to-face surgery held in the wake of the muder of MP Sir David Amess.

Long serving Mr Amess was stabbed to death on Friday whilst holding a surgery in his Southend West constituency. A British 25-year-old man of Somali heritage has been arrested under the Terrorism Act.

Attention then turned immediately to the safety of holding such events but Mr Amess’s local Conservative colleagues, Craig Williams MP and Russell George MS, went ahead with an in-person surgery in Guilsfield on Saturday, albeit with police present.

“I thought long and hard about whether to postpone but glad we did not,” said Mr Williams.

“I think Sir David would have approved, especially with so many local issues discussed and casework taken away by the team. Also, a huge thanks to Heddlu Dyfed-Powys Police for their presence and reassurance.

Mr George reflected: “Many sharing their thoughts at the murder of Sir David Amess MP who was doing his job as we were today. Thoughts with his family & friends.”

Earlier this year, Mr Williams’s Welshpool offices were attacked by a protester who smashed windows before handing himself over to police.
