A whopping £3,700 has been raised to tackle local men’s mental health issues following a concert held in memory of popular Welshpool man John Gannon, known as Raj.
‘Rajfezt’ was held during the summer at Club 1898 and featured a number of local acts performing throughout the day with Raj's friends and family raising the money alongside the quality music that attracted a sell-out crowd.
Organised by friend, Dean Allen (pictured left), with support from Donna Powell (pictured right) and Cathy Cooper, the day proved a massive hit and provided a suitable send off for a man that was known for his love of music.
“Everyone gave their time for free and I can’t thank them enough for the perfect way they allowed friends to come together and remember my brother through the music he loved,” said Dave Gannon, pictured handing the cheque over to Ponthafren Operations Manager, Julia Gorman.
“He would never have believed so many people would come together in his memory like this. Every performer and band played at least one song dedicated to Raj, each one had special meaning and it’s a night I will always remember.”
The cheque will go towards Ponthafren’s counselling services in collaboration with the money being raised in the community through ‘Movember’. All will go towards raising awareness of men’s mental health and encouraging men to get talking.
How the day went:
Tony Hughes launched Rajfezt with a great rock’n’roll set and sound, followed by local favourite John Hughes who had everyone singing to a lively session.
Former X-factor star Reece Wiltshire gave his typical modern vibe and energy to a venue filled with all ages, before Dai Roberts entertained with an acoustic set full of soulful style.
Rajattack were another local band put together especially for Rajfezt and they set the night session up with real momentum before the (reformed) Soul Jets blew everyone away with their brassy full sound crowding the dance floor.
Steve Edwards belted out from his wide range of songs as the night came to its conclusion with Dark Horse headlining the day with a rock-based finale.
