Tongan eruption felt in Powys!

The sheer power of the underwater volcano eruption on Saturday off the coast of Tonga is the fact that it was detected 10,000 miles away here in Powys.

Experts believe that the massive Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcano eruption in the south Pacific was likely to be the biggest recorded anywhere on the planet in more than 30 years.

Dramatic images from space captured the eruption in real time, as a huge plume of ash, gas and steam was spewed up to 12 miles into the atmosphere - and tsunami waves were sent crashing across the Pacific to as far as the USA and Peru.

Meanwhile, a Welsh meteorologist reported that the eruption was so powerful it was recorded on local barometers.

Sabrina Lee, who also presents the weather on BBC Wales, highlighted last night: “Traces of the shockwaves were picked up at weather stations across the world."

She then shared a pressure chart on Twitter which shows that two waves were detected.

“(It’s) A reminder of how our atmosphere is connected,” she said.

Aid agencies fear that the 1.2m tsunami that washed through Tonga could cause major health problems for the islands, with a number of people still reported missing.
