Golfa bank closure causes “total gridlock"

25/01/2022 @ 10:37

Motorists are ignoring the 15-mile official detour caused by the closure of Golfa Bank and are instead following SatNav down a narrow B road causing “total gridlock”.

The long awaited work started on Golfa Bank yesterday, and is expected to take up to three months with motorists being taken on a huge detour via Meifod instead.

But those with local knowledge or using SatNav, including lorry drivers, are instead taking the Guilsfield-Cyfronydd B4392 road which may save miles, but is already becoming treacherous.

One resident who lives along the road said “it’s total gridlock with wagons, cars and vehicles far too big for a small road”.

The Welsh Government’s Highways Agency is believed to be monitoring the situation but it appears there is very little that can actually be done.

The narrow road is also popular with horse riders and dog walkers, and our reader told us she will have to “plan alternatives for three months if it continues”.

There was relief last month when it was announced that work on the Golfa Bank would start after more than two years of traffic lights on the busy Llanfair Road.

It is hoped that the work can be completed ahead of the busy tourist season.
