It has literally been a facelift at one of Welshpool’s oldest pubs which is having a rebrand, replacing one of Britain’s leading military and political figures of 19th-century Britain.
The Wellington pub was named after Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington over 160 years ago, but when it reopens its freshly painted doors next month, it will officially be known as ‘The Welly’.
The war hero’s image has been replaced by a green wellington boot as the logo, with owners Punch Taverns opting for the name that it has been called by locals for years.
After marketing that the pub sells £225,000 worth of drinks a year, Punch Taverns will welcome Jess Regan, from The Oak in Guilsfield, who said she will be bringing in a business partner to run The Welly whilst confirming that it will return to Welshpool’s social scene on Friday, February 18.
Welshpool’s night life is slowly getting back to normal following the pandemic. Molto’s nightclub reopens this weekend, while The Bakehouse and revamped Green Dragon have become welcome additions.
There is no news on the future re-opening of 1898, which closed prior to the last set of restrictions with its owners pledging to be back.
