Shock as Savers set to close

12/05/2022 @ 07:57

Welshpool has been rocked by the news that another big high street name is set to call it a day in the town.

Savers stunned staff yesterday by confirming it would close in June when its current lease runs out, leaving another big hole on the high street.

In a letter to its six staff, seen by MyWelshpool, the company said that after “much careful consideration by the senior retail team” it had taken the “difficult decision to close the Welshpool Savers store”.

“This is due to the lease coming to an end without the landlord giving the option of renewal and means your role is now in a potential redundancy situation,” they were told.

Staff are then informed that the company will follow a “fair and thorough process regarding this potential redundancy and explore all options available to us”.

Savers has become a popular shop in the town centre with the staff always going out of their way to provide a helpful service, so the news has stunned shoppers.

One staff member told us: “We were shocked to be honest. We haven’t been given an exact date but expect it to be around June 16.”

Welshpool town centre has been hit by the closures of Sainsbury's, HSBC Bank and W.H. Smith in the past year or so and all three premises remain empty.

We have asked Savers for an official statement.
