Town Council opposed to resubmitted hotel plans

Plans for a new £7.5 million, 40-bedroom hotel, a drive-through Starbucks coffee shop and Greggs bakery development for the outskirts of Welshpool have been rejected by Welshpool Town Council.

At this week’s planning committee, town planners said no to the plans due to concerns over traffic, pollution and taking tourism away from the town centre, and their comments will now be considered when Powys County Council makes the final call at a later date.

It is the third time the developer has submitted plans for the area, with this latest bid reportedly addressing concerns previously raised.

But it didn’t impress the Town Council, who have said they would prefer a hotel to be developed closer to the town centre.

Residents living close to the site already complain of the congestion caused by recent developments such as McDonald’s, and believe this would create a major problem with increased traffic.

After hearing from one local resident, councillors voted unanimously to oppose the plans.
