The Mid Wales branch of the trade union UNITE has been spreading some Christmas cheer by donating to local foodbanks.

Representatives visited Welshpool Foodbank as part of a tour of organisations that took them to foodbanks in Newtown, Machynlleth, Llanidloes and Bishops Castle and to the Newtown Food Surplus.

“We know these are difficult times for so many people in our community and we wanted to help those organisations helping others, particularly at this time of year” said Harry Sillitoe, Branch Chair of the Mid Wales branch of the Trade Union UNITE.

“We have been so impressed by the dedication, sheer hard work and the welcoming kindness of all the people we have met in these organisations” said Harry. “We all know that Foodbanks should not need to exist but we also always need to stand with our community in times of need.”

The local UNITE branch have donated £3,000 to the foodbanks and the food surplus in total this Christmas. The Union also made a donation to the Montgomeryshire Family Crisis Centre.

“We regularly support MFCC”, said Kait Duerden, the branch secretary. “They do a fantastic job and help people at some of the most difficult times in their lives. This is a hard year for many and, as an organisation with hundreds of members across Mid Wales, we need to do our part in showing solidarity and supporting the communities we live in.”
