Emergency services plea as area set for another drenching

10/01/2023 @ 05:51

Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service have issued a warning to take extra care today (Tuesday) in the Welshpool area as floods are expected to worsen throughout the day.

Persistent rain has resulted in our local rivers overflowing, and with the soaking set to continue today, the service is reminding us to only drive if absolutely necessary and not to risk driving through floodwater on the roads.

The fire service said people walking near water should also keep dogs on leads, time their walks to make the most of daylight and always keep back from the edge.

More than 20 flood alerts are in place across Wales, but two for the Rivers Vyrnwy and Severn impact our area with alerts also in place for the feeder tributaries like the River Tanat.

The Met Office will keep its weather warning in place until 8pm tonight.

Here’s what the Natural Resource Wales is telling us:

River Vyrnwy, River Tanat and River Cain & their tributaries

River levels are expected to be above normal. Flooding of low-lying land and roads is expected. Roads close to Meifod Bridge, the B4393 near Llansantffraid Bridge and the B4398 at New Bridge Llanymynech could also be affected by the rising levels.

River Severn and its tributaries

River levels are expected to be above normal. Flooding of low-lying land and roads is expected. Roads close to Caersws, Cilcewydd, Trehelig, Welshpool and Llandrinio could also be affected with rising river levels. We will continue to monitor the situation.

PICTURE: There are concerns that levels could hit those that were witnessed at Llandrinio bridge two years ago.
