Organisers of the Urdd National Eisteddfod have confirmed that the 2024 edition will be held in Meifod.
The event is billed as one of the largest youth festivals in Europe, attracting up to 20,000 people aged under 25 for a week of celebrating Welsh language and culture.
The organisers announced: “Meifod will be the home of the Maldwyn Urdd National Eisteddfod in 2024.
“We’re looking forward to our visit already, and our members and volunteers in Maldwyn are all working hard to welcome us to the area.”
Mathrafal Farm, where the National Eisteddfod was hosted in 2003 and 2015, has been chosen as the location of next year’s Urdd Eisteddfod, the first time that it has been held in Montgomeryshire since 1988.
Machynlleth was originally announced in 2019 as the location, but the lack of a suitable location has forced the organisers to move it 30 miles east.
The move has been welcomed by Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams, who said: “The Urdd Eisteddfod is Europe’s largest touring youth festival, with over 15,000 children and young people competing every year. I am therefore delighted that it will be returning to Montgomeryshire in 2024!
“Whilst it is a shame that the organisers are unable to hold the festival in Machynlleth as was originally intended, I am very pleased that next year’s Urdd Eisteddfod will still be held in Montgomeryshire – replicating the huge success of the National Eisteddfod previously held at Mathrafal in 2003 and 2015.
“It will be a fantastic occasion in celebrating our Welsh language and culture, as well as boosting Montgomeryshire’s local economy through welcoming thousands of visitors to our beautiful county.”
Montgomeryshire Senedd Member, Russell George, who said he was “delighted” that it was returning to Meifod which would become a “destination for families across Wales in 2024”.
