09/03/2023 @ 11:03

The Welshpool area has been placed on amber alert from midday until 9am on Friday morning as the snow continues to fall heavier than planned.

The heavy downfall that was expected for the high ground is impacting all areas of North Powys, prompting the Met Office to up its Yellow Snow & Ice Warning to Amber for the rest of the day and night.

“Heavy snow is likely to cause significant disruption through Thursday into early Friday,” the Met Office explained.

Local schools are closed and roads continue to pose problems with several rural communities in the Welshpool area now cut off.

The Powys County Council gritters continue to battle the conditions with a focus on keeping the main roads open.

What The Met Office tells to expect from an Amber Warning:

  • Travel delays on roads are likely, stranding some vehicles and passengers
  • Some delays and cancellations to rail and bus services are likely
  • There is a good chance that some rural communities could become cut off
  • Power cuts are likely and other services, such as mobile phone coverage, may be affected
  • Injuries from slips and falls are likely on icy surfaces
