M&Co to close in a fortnight

A crushing blow is to be delivered to Welshpool town centre on April 11 when M&Co closes its doors.

While the head office has remained tight lipped, staff at Welshpool have been told that April 11 will be their last day of trading.

The huge town centre retailer has been operating a closing down sale since December when it was announced that the company would be closing all of its 170 stores across the UK, following its collapse into administration for the second time in two years. 

The brand was bought out of administration by AK Retail Holdings. But the deal did not include the stores themselves, so they are therefore set to shut for good, with around 2,000 members of staff expected to be made redundant.

Formely called Mackays, the firm dates back to 1834 when it was established as a pawnbroker. It made the switch to clothing sales in 1953 before rebranding as M&Co in 2005.
