A popular Welshpool man who was a part of the town’s high school Welsh Schools winning football team in the 1960’s has sadly passed away this evening.

Keith Williams, known as ‘Wheaty’ for decades due to his love of the cereal Weetabix, died this evening at the age of 75 at The Rhallt Care Home where he had been living with dementia for the past two years.

“I can’t thank the staff there enough for looking after dad these past couple of years,” said son, Colin. “He’s had a tough couple of years but it was incredible just how many people in the town often asked about him so a lot of people will be saddened with the news of his passing.”

Keith was a HGV driver for Aber Carriers, Bookers and lastly Steve Davies Transport, but was well known for his support of local football, first as a player, then manager and supporter.

He won the Welsh Schools Cup with the high school back in 1963 (pictured), and went on to play for Welshpool Amateurs and Waterloo Rovers, who he also managed.

“I am told that he would eat Weetabix day and night so that’s the nickname they gave him, and it stuck!” said Colin.

As well as Colin, Keith also has a daughter Joanne, with both having three children between them – Adam, Kirsty and Maggie who was named after his late mum, Maggie Williams, who was married to George Williams.
