New Xmas lights plan binned after lack of town support

Welshpool will not be having new Christmas lights this year after a town council-led community funding drive attracted little interest from residents and businesses.

The current display was reported to be on its last legs last Christmas, and the Town Council immediately launched its new Christmas Lights bid in the New Year, earmarking £25,000 in its budget which they hoped would be match-funded by public donations and sponsorship.

But that latter part of the bargain has not materialised, meaning the Town Council will have to revert to Plan B which is trying to make the most of what they have.

“We asked from buy-in from the town for new Christmas lights and there was little interest from businesses and residents,” said Town Clerk, Anne Wilson.

“We put up to £25k in the budget to be match funded, and residents and businesses, in the main, were not interested in sponsorship or fundraising.

“However, there are many of The Cross street light strings where bulbs are out and we are just working with Wynne Construction to see what we can do.”
