Local businessman Billy Spencer has won Thursday’s by-election for the vacant Llanerchyddol Ward seat on Welshpool Town Council.

Billy (pictured), who is also well known as a talented singer, attracted 200 votes as an Independent candidate, with Labour’s 18-year-old Phoebe Rolinson showing she is one for the future with 142 votes.

The by-election was a breath of fresh air for local democracy in the town with both running vibrant campaigns in the first by-election held for a Welshpool Town Council seat for some time.

“Thank-you to everyone who took the time to vote for me and who has supported me throughout my campaign,” said Billy. “A special mention to Cllr Graham Breeze (county councillor), Cllr Phil Pritchard and Cllr Estelle Bleivas who have guided me throughout the whole process and never doubted me.

“I would like to also applaud Pheobe on her campaign and effort and wish her every success for the future, and finally I would just like to let the people of Welshpool know that I will give it my all for them to be heard and try my very best to better our little town.”

Welshpool could be set for another by-election following the news last month that popular councillor Julie Arnold had stood down due to taking up a new job in Cornwall.
