The future of Welshpool Town Football Club has once again come into question this weekend, but it looks set to fight on following crisis talks.
Twelve years after coming close to folding, the club has been on rocky ground once again this summer with a raft of players deserting to leave the squad threadbare going into the new Ardal North East League season, the third tier of Welsh football.
Rumours started to circulate yesterday that crisis talks were being held, and last night the club issued a statement, confirming that the reserve team would fold and all resources would be pumped into the first team.
“Due to increased travelling distances in the FAW Reserve League and a number of summer departures, the club has decided to consolidate and field our strongest squad in the Ardal North East League,” the statement read.
“We are disappointed to lose our successful and youthful reserve team but the club has no choice but to focus on the sustainability of the senior men’s team. We are looking forward to the season and the challenges it brings.”
Welshpool Town is one of the oldest football clubs in Wales, having formed in 1877, but came close to folding in 2011 under similar circumstances to this summer. Back then though David Jones stepped in to save the club, spending two years in charge rebuilding the club before moving onto Berriew.
