Welshpool’s McDonald’s, heralded as the world’s best by a Michelin-starred chef just nine months ago, has been handed a 1-star rating following its most recent Food Standards Agency (FSA) check.
Inspectors certainly weren’t ‘lovin it’ after returning the dreadful rating, and McDonald’s head office has vowed to turn things around quickly by dispatching a specialist team of food safety experts to Welshpool.
The rating has not appeared on the FSA web site yet, and we have requested the reasons for the low rating, but eagle-eyed burger lovers spotted the new rating displayed in the restaurant’s window.
A spokesperson for the chain told us: “At McDonald’s, we pride ourselves on high standards of cleanliness and food hygiene, and strive to maintain 5-star FSA ratings in all of our restaurants, which our Welshpool restaurant has held since it was first rated in September 2021.
“In this instance, the 1-star rating was awarded and we have immediately put steps in place to remedy the issues identified, including working with third party food safety experts.
“We are confident that the urgent action we have taken has improved the standards at the store and we will be requesting a re-visit inspection where we intend to return to our usual 5-star rating as soon as possible.”
In January, we reported how Michelin-star chef, Gareth Ward, the winner of the UK’s Best Restaurant winner in Ynyshir, named the Welshpool fast food outlet as his favourite place to eat out in an interview.
The award-winning chef said: “Welshpool McDonald’s is on a different level. It’s just got different elements to everyone else. It's just absolutely smashing it.
“Last time I had a crispy chicken and it definitely had something like truffle mayonnaise on it. I don't think it did, but it tasted like it did!
“Everybody I speak to says this is, by far, the best McDonald's in the world. Welshpool McDonald's, that’s what it's all about.”
