Welshpool area set for massive rise in water bills

02/10/2023 @ 09:49

Home owners in the Welshpool area are being told that they can expect a whopping rise in their water bills over the next few years, by the company that provides our water.

Hafren Dyfrdwy said that it intends to spend more than £250million over the second half of this decade to “transform service, support customers and the environment”.

It says the investment is being made whilst the same time keeping “bills affordable”, but it has also been revealed that the average bill will go up by £12.50 per month by the 2030.

That represents an increase of nearly 50p every single day of the year, putting a tighter squeeze on household budgets.

But the company said that the five-year, multi-million plan for 2025 to 2030, submitted to regulator Ofwat today (Monday), is their biggest ever investment in infrastructure and services that will “provide a strong and reliable service that customers deserve, along with huge benefits for the local communities in Powys and Wrexham.”

What Hafren Dyfrdwy is promising:

-       Reducing leaks by a further 10% over the next five years

-       Cut supply interruptions by 72%

-       Protect an extra 554 properties from lead pipes

-       Investment to protect and enhance the environment, by working with the Welsh Government to make progress towards Wales’s 2050 net zero goal, whilst delivering its most ambitious environmental plan ever by:

o   Reduce the number of external sewer floods by 8%

o   Cutting carbon emissions from our water assets by 15%

o   Saving more than 800 tonnes of carbon a year by restoring peatland

o   The plan is underpinned by the company’s largest programme of financial support to date, designed to help more customers than ever before

What the company’s Managing Directior, James Jesic, said:

“Hafren Dyfrdwy may be the smallest UK water company, but we have mighty ambitions when it comes to delivering for our customers in Powys and Wrexham.  It will see a record amount of investment for local communities by improving and maintaining our network, to make sure we keep providing a service that people want and deserve, all while ensuring value for money.

“We’ve also listened to what our customers want and, as we move forward over the next five years, we will work even harder for them. We’ll improve and maintain our network, we’ll strive to enhance the environment around us, while also directly giving back to the local communities and charities across Powys and Wrexham through our now even larger, community fund.”

What it will cost us

It will mean that over the next five years, there will be an incremental increase on bills and by 2030, it will have risen by £12.50 per month – almost 50p more a day.

Hafren Dyfrdwy will be more than doubling the number of people it helps financially and by 2030 it expects to be helping over 7,000 customers with paying their bill.

What else is Hafren Dyfrdwy promising to do?

-       Supporting local charities by further boosting the Hafren Dyfrdwy Community Fund

-       Reducing average daily use levels to 131 litres per person, per day with the aim to drop to 110 litres per person, per day by 2050

-       Upgrading 24% properties to the latest smart meters to reduce leaks and save customers money

-       Expanding our apprentices’ pipeline to around 10% of our workforce by 2030

-       Proudly delivering our Welsh language commitments
