Elwyn to take on Tories for Montgomeryshire seat

Plaid Cymru’s National Executive Committee has confirmed the nomination of Cllr Elwyn Vaughan as the candidate for the Montgomeryshire Glyndwr constituency at the next Westminster election.

Cllr Vaughan, the member for the Glantwymyn ward on Powys Council and group leader at the authority, was chosen following hustings at Newtown and Chirk.

He stood for Plaid Cymru at the 2021 Senedd elections, gaining the best ever result for the party in Montgomeryshire when coming second behind the Conservatives Russell George, but above the Lib Dems for the first time ever.

Cllr Vaughan has been active with a number of recent campaigns, including the ongoing bid to save the Air Ambulance base at Welshpool, assisting Hodley families chapel campaign to stop the building of a road across the cemetery, and campaigning for openness and transparency against Powys County Council’s decision to sell a farm at Leighton in a secret deal,

Cllr Vaughan said: “It’s a privilege to be chosen as the candidate for Montgomeryshire – Glyndwr. As the keeper of the old Welsh liberal tradition of Cymru Fydd – we will focus on environmental and community sustainability and supporting an entrepreneurial and can-do attitude in Montgomeryshire – a essential element when we face continued depopulation and loss of our young people.

“In the face of a Conservative party which has created a mess of everything, the reason Powys - as ALL Councils are facing cuts to services and pressures, the reason our residents are facing high inflation rates, facing a cost of living crisis, facing higher mortgages, – the reason the public sector are facing further cuts after a decade of cuts after cuts – is the economic shambles created by the Tories in power.

“Who can remember the £30 billion cost of the budget by Liz Truss and Kwasi Kwarteng resulting in the Bank of England having to safeguard the pensions sector with a support scheme – worth a potential £65bn?

“Plaid Cymru have stood up for Wales in the HS2 debacle calling for us to have all the funds due to Wales – at least £3bn in the face of Conservative refusal.

“Montgomeryshire is the only constituency in Wales that has never elected a Labour MP, I’m asking all those therefore that share similar values, that want justice for our communities, want someone to stand up for the area, that puts people and communities first to join with me, lend us their support and ensure we have a strong progressive voice for Montgomeryshire Glyndwr – strength in unity, let’s create change.”

The seat is currently held by Craig Williams for the Conservatives. The Lib-Dems and Labour parties are yet to confirm their candidates.
