Welshpool charity was a world first

Ahead of its annual meeting in early November, one of Welshpool’s most prominent charities claims that it was the first of its kind in the world to provide its service.

The Heulwen Trust says it is “bringing sunshine and smiles to vulnerable and less abled adults and children” by offering scenic canal boat trips through some of the most beautiful Welsh countryside.

The charity launches its trip from the outskirts of Welshpool and to date almost 70,000 people with varying abilities have enjoyed free daily trips on their two canal boats.

“We believe we were the first charity in the world to provide this type of service for disabled children and adults using canal boats,” a spokesperson told us.

“Our two canal boats are in constant demand by (entities like) special schools, hospitals etc.”

But the charity relied on the constant support of volunteers and fundraising, with the annual Country & Western providing the main source of funding.

Their annual meeting will be held at the Powis Suite, Royal Oak Hotel on November 7 from 6.30pm.

Those interested in supporting the charity by attending, or finding out more information should email chairman@heulwentrust.co.uk on or before October 31.
