Sign vandals “won’t change 20mph policy”

The vandal who spray painted the 20mph sign in Arddleen in protest at the new speed restrictions is simply costing the tax payer more money and won’t impact policy, the county council has said.

The signs were defaced in recent days, and it comes amidst growing calls for the unpopular policy to be reversed.

But the Welsh Government are unlikely to be moved, with Powys County Council adding that the damage is pointless.

“In Powys we have installed over 1,600 new 20mph signs along more than 5,500km of the county road network,” a county council spokesperson told us.

“Although there have been a few incidents of signs being defaced or vandalised, these have been isolated cases which have quickly been dealt with at a local level.

“Welsh Government states that vandalism of signs is totally unacceptable and such action will not lead to a change in the policy and the default speed limit, but is a waste of scarce resources and officer time when councils are contending with a range of different pressures.”

Over 400,000 people have signed a petition to reverse the decision since it was introduced across Wales in September.
