Antique events uncover gems in Montgomery

A series of bi-monthly antiques valuation events held in Montgomery by a Shropshire fine art auction house has uncovered a host of valuable antiques, silver and jewellery so far this year.

Due to this success, Halls Fine Art in Shrewsbury has announced that the valuation events, held at Montgomery Town Hall from 10am to 2pm on the first Thursday of the month, will continue during 2024.

The latest gem from Montgomery to be sold at auction by Halls Fine Art was an early 20th century Mittenwald violincello that made £3,600, despite needing restoration.

Other items discovered in the ancient border town included a diamond ring which sold for £1,200 and a silver tray which fetched more than £1,000.

At the latest valuation event, held on Thursday, Halls Fine Art’s valuers took in for sale a George III officer’s sword and a Sparrow Beak jug, made in Bristol between 1770-’77, each valued at between £300 to £500 and a gold necklace and bracelet valued at between £600 to £800.

The last of this year’s valuation events in Montgomery will be held on Thursday, December 7

“We have had a very good year of consignments from the Montgomery area and have been made to feel very welcome in this lovely town,” said Maryanne Lineker-Mobberley, Halls Fine Art’s associate director and silver and jewellery specialist.

“I would encourage people living in and around the town to bring their items for valuation, without obligation to sell, during our bi-monthly events. Obviously, they don’t have to wait for the events, as they can either come to our office in Shrewsbury or call us on 01743 450700 if they need advice or have interesting items to value.

“Members of our fine art team are also happy to make home visits to view collections.”
