Shocker as local drink and drug driving on the rise

Local police offices are stepping up their campaign to clamp down on drink and drug drivers after shocking statistics show that cases are on the rise.

With the Festive Season approaching, officers will be increasing their visible presence on the roads after the latest annual figures showed a 9% rise in offenders in Wales from the previous year.

A whopping 4,752 people were found guilty of drink or drug driving offences in Wales in 2021, but more worryingly is the fact that drug drivers accounted for nearly half withy a 34% increase from 2020, but this could be credited to an increase in testing and enforcement activity by police.

Supt Jolene Mann, of Dyfed-Powys Police, said: “Driving under the influence of drink or drugs puts people on our roads in unnecessary danger. Just one drink can have a negative impact on your ability to drive.

“Officers across the area will be putting a focus on dangerous drivers throughout December, ensuring our communities are protected and people are kept safe.”

The force stressed that there is no calculation for how much a person can drink and remain under the limit, with metabolism, age, weight, and other factors all having an influence.

A conviction could see a minimum 12-month driving ban, up to six months in prison, an unlimited fine, an 11-year endorsement on a driving license, and a criminal record.

The maximum penalty for causing death by careless driving when under the influence of drugs or drink is life in prison, with a minimum driving ban of five years.
