Campaign launched to save Welshpool care home

A campaign is underway to try and save Dorothy Hughes House, the Welshpool care home that is set to close on March 31.

A statement issued to MyWelshpool last month revealed the sad news due to rising costs and dwindling numbers, ending 35 years of care provided at the landmark property.

The Trustees said in their statement that they have “tried to provide this accommodation at an affordable cost but sadly, rising prices and costs have made this increasingly uneconomic and mindful of their duty to safeguard the trust, the Trustees have reluctantly decided to close the home”.

But a letter presented to town councillors at this week’s full council meeting said that “Dorothy Hughes House was set up for the people of Welshpool” and called for a new Board of Trustees to be found and an advertising campaign to fill it up.

The letter, which was presented anonymously at the meeting, said that with a new business plan, it could become viable, and added that one resident, aged 99, would be evicted “with nowhere to go”.

Introducing the issue, Mayor, Cllr Nick Howells, said he had received concerns himself but pointed out that the town’s trio of County Councillors have arranged a meeting with the Trustees to “discuss the why’s and where fors ,and see what’s happening”.

He requested that the matter be deferred to allow feedback from that meeting to be included in the mix “for a more in-depth discussion”. It was backed unanimously.

The Trustees previously said that the current residents would be moved to new homes with their statement declaring: “We must now move on and decide a new direction to meet the objective of the trust which is to provide a benefit to the local community.”

What is Dorothy Hughes House?

The house was built in 1878 in a commanding position in Welshpool, overlooking the town and with wonderful views across to the Long Mountain.

The property was purchased as a result of a legacy donated by the late Dorothy Hughes and the house received its first residents in 1993.
