Slashed solar rates slammed

02/11/2011 @ 03:37

Government plans to slash solar panel feed-in rates will damage the green economy and jeopardise small scale local projects, a leading county councillor has claimed.

Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Cllr Wynne Jones said the changes announced by Department of Climate Change Minister, Gregory Barker on Monday would hit county households and discourage residents from installing electricity generating solar photovoltaic panels.

“The minister’s announcement to more than half the feed-in rate for small schemes installed after December 12 is a major set-back for anyone in the county considering installing panels to reduce energy costs,” he said.

“The reduction is a drastic cut from a government that says it is green and is going to have a serious impact on plans to develop home renewable energy projects. Anyone considering installing panels will have to act fast and make sure their scheme is registered on or before December 11.”

Councillor Jones added that the drastic changes could also hit companies set up to meet demand and put jobs at risk.
