Welshpool Town Council will ask Powys County Council to reverse its controversial changes to recycling centres.
On April 1, Powys launched a new booking system for its recycling centres, including the Potters facility in Welshpool, and also introduced charges for some rubbish like DIY materials.
It caused a storm of protest with more than 1,000 MyWelshpool readers venting their frustration in the week running up to its launch by commenting on one of our stories posted to Facebook.
While the system has been generally praised by those who have actually used it, many readers tell us they simply don’t bother anymore, with many just disposing of the recyclable waste in their black bins instead.
Also, as part of the changes, new double height recycling skips have been installed with step access provided.
But at this week’s full council meeting, Cllr Julie Arnold tabled a motion requesting that Welshpool Town Council intervenes and lobbies the county council.
Her motion stated: “Welshpool Town Council calls on Powys County Council to reverse its changes to recycling centres and restore single story recycling skips at Welshpool Household Recycling Centre and instructs the Town Clerk to write to the appropriate Cabinet Member expressing the above.”
While some councillors appeared to be in favour of the new system, the majority backed Cllr Arnold who will represent the Town Council in a future meeting to be arranged with Powys County Council.
Cllr Arnold told us she was against the charges “with so many families living in poverty” and said she was concerned about a potential rise in fly tipping.
As part of its 2024-25 Budget, Powys County Council proposed to introduce charges for DIY waste at its Household Waste Recycling Centres and introduced a booking system. The changes are expected to save the Council £400,000 over two years.
A petition was launched in February opposing the changes and it now contains 4,687 signatures.
There have also been technical problems since its launch preventing residents from booking their slots.
