Welshpool Town Council has slammed the “ridiculous” nine-metre ‘totem sign’ that Starbucks wants to erect on its new drive-thru next to McDonald’s.
Councillors were not impressed last night to learn that the sign is part of extensive branding and signage that the global coffee house chain wants to erect as part of the new business taking shape at the out-of-town Buttington Roundabout.
Despite the Town Council being against the development in general from day one, last night the Events and Planning Committee took a softer tone, accepting the signage was needed but having reservations about its size and scale.
Town Mayor, Cllr Phil Owen, said it should be brought in line with the signage used by McDonald’s across the road, while stand-in committee chair, Cllr Sally Fitzgerald, called it "ridiculous".
In total, Starbucks wants to install the one 9m internally illuminated totem sign, two internally illuminated Drive Thru letter signs, three internally illuminated company roundels on the building, two internally illuminated letter signs, one banner sign, internally illuminated directional signs and internally illuminated height restrictor lettering.
The Town Council’s comments will be forwarded to Powys County Council who will make the final decision.
