A 48-year old man has been arrested following a protracted police investigation into the theft of ladies underwear from Welshpool washing lines.

The man was caught red-handed in the early hours of this morning (Wednesday) after a member of the public contacted police that he was acting suspicious; he was later caught in possession of stolen ladies underwear. He has been charged with 17 offences relating to underwear theft, and has asked for four further offences to be taken into consideration.

Mywelshpool was made aware of a number of thefts from washing lines during the summer, but held off from reporting details on the request of police who had launched an operation and feared publicity could send the offender underground.

For legal reasons, the man cannot be named but is said to be local.

Detective Inspector Diane Davies said: “We are aware of the high level of concern that these offences have caused to Welshpool and particularly those people directly affected. There has been an operation running over some time with the focus on identifying and bringing the offender to Justice.

“I would personally like to thank the member of public who gave out the alert that triggered the arrest; officers were nearby and were in fact targeting that specific area. I would encourage members of the public who see suspicious activity to please report it straight away.”

The man was refused bail and will appear before Brecon Magistrates tomorrow (Thursday).
