Calling all young musicians...

17/11/2011 @ 05:41

A new initiative to bring young musicians from Powys together for a residential course and concert has been announced.

Although North and South Powys Youth Orchestras collaborated on a joint concert some years ago, this is the first time both will join together for a residential course. It will also be the first time that other players will be invited to join in.

The residential course is taking place at Cefn Lea, Dolfor from February 13–15 2012 and will be followed by a concert at the Pavilion, Llandrindod Wells on February 18.

Organisers Powys County Council is encouraging as many young musicians in the county as possible to take part. Participation will be open to players of any orchestral instrument of Grade 5 standard (or equivalent) and above, regardless of whether they are currently members of either North or South Powys Youth Orchestras.

The project has been initiated by Powys County Council as part of the implementation of the Powys Children and Young People’s Music Strategy. Thanks to the generous support of both the council and the Arts Council of Wales, places are being offered at highly subsidised rates.

"We are extremely pleased to be organising and supporting the residential course and concert," said County Councillor Wynne Jones, Cabinet Member for Arts and Culture. "The council is immensely proud of the young musicians in the county and happy to support collaborative music making in this exciting and highly rewarding way."

Tickets for the concert on February 18 are already on sale from Hafren (www.thehafren.co.uk) and are priced at £7.50 for adults, £5.00 for OAPs / unemployed / students, and free for accompanied children under the age of 18.

For further details and application forms contact the Powys Youth Orchestra Co-ordinator Julie Turner on julie@turners4.freeserve.co.uk by December 1 2011.
