30/11/2011 @ 04:47

Powys County Council has hosted representatives from public bodies across Wales to discuss standards in local government.

The All-Wales Standards Conference 2011 was attended by independent members, county and town and community councillors who sit on county council standards committees.

Representatives from the police, fire service and national park authorities also attended the conference with invited guests to listen to guest speakers, network with other standards members and discuss to standards in local government.

A range of issues were discussed by delegates including the effectiveness of the current system of dealing with complaints against councillors. Delegates also supported retaining the current system of regulation but with a separate code for county councils and town and community councils together with a greater role from standards committees in dealing with complaints locally.

Peter Swanson, Independent Chair of Powys Standards Committee, said: ā€œIā€™m delighted that so many representatives from public bodies attended this conference and made it a huge success. It was a successful and interesting day which highlighted the complexities of local government standards in Wales.ā€
