Child taken from house by police

Residents in Holbrook, near Belper, said 12 police cars arrived at Well Yard, off Town Street, at 1100 BST.

They said a child was taken out of a house and flown to hospital by Derbyshire Air Ambulance.

The village has been cordoned off but officers have denied reports of a gunshot being fired.

A spokesman said police were alerted by a neighbour who had expressed "concern" for the occupant of the house and officers attended the scene.

"Town Street has been closed to traffic and pedestrians," he added.

"No further information can be released at this stage."

Officials are expected to make a statement soon.

Forensic investigators are at the scene and a cordon has been put up in the village at the scene close to the Spotted Cow pub.

Resident Andrew West told BBC News: "A police helicopter landed in the field and the village was then surrounded by armed officers.

"It was very chaotic, but it was all over in a few minutes."

BBC reporter James Roberson, who is at the scene, said: "Holbrook is a small village about four miles north of Derby. It's a quiet village full of stone-fronted and Victorian brick-built houses.

"The whole of Town Street has been cordoned off, about a 200-yard stretch.

"Dozens of police vehicles turned up and the air ambulance landed nearby.

"Forensic officers and senior investigating officers are going in and out of Well Yard, which is a yard of smaller houses in the middle of Town Street.

"Lots of neighbours are standing in their gardens on Town Street but they say they know nothing about what happened."
