A newspaper group’s independent rankings system for education in Wales has placed Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant Primary School as the second best in Wales.

Trinity Mirror has created its unofficial system based on 21 different government-approved measures, put together from the latest publicly-available data.

Llanrhaeadr placed second from 1,255 schools, leaving the headteacher with a big reason to smile.

“The biggest thing is the dedication of the staff and enthusiasm and support of staff, pupils and parents,” said Wendy Jones: “They are very dedicated, as well as the governors. It's that community spirit that brings it all together and moves us forward.

"We have been to other schools and seen what they have done effectively and adapted that to our way of working.”

“I teach every child in the school, know them personally and learn their strengths and areas for development.”

"In a small school you have to have that teamwork with staff and parents."

The top five in Wales were Maendy Primary, Torfaen; Llanrhaeadr ym Mochnant School, Powys; Ysgol Gymraeg Rhydaman, Carmarthenshire; Wolfcastle School, Pembrokeshire; and Llangattock School, Powys.

The results were announced on Wales Online's website this week - http://www.walesonline.co.uk/news/local-news/real-schools-guide-complete-guide-6489120

Trinity Mirror said that its ranking system aims to “give a far more sophisticated measure of how good schools are – and provide parents with a better idea of which schools will help their child prosper, no matter what their background is”.
