25/11/2010 @ 07:43

Around 80 passengers escaped unharmed when a train derailed just outside Welshpool last night (Wednesday).

The incident happened at 8.15pm last night and saw several wheels from the front carriage come off the tracks.

The police say nobody was hurt in the derailment and firefighters led passengers, including a pregnant woman, to safety.

An investigation into the derailment, which involved the 6.09pm Birmingham to Aberystwyth service, is under way.

Mid and West Fire Service said: "Approximately 80 passengers have been assisted from the train by Fire Service and Railtrack personnel.

"We have had no reports of any casualties. We had five appliances at the scene."

Services have resumed as normal today.
