The Welshpool based Potter Group has confirmed its position as the biggest privately owned waste management organisation in Wales by purchasing a Pembrokeshire based company.

The firm has acquired waste management organisation Resources Management UK (RML) from SITA UK.

RML operates a landfill and materials recycling facility (MRF) at Withyhedge, Rudbaxton, near Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire and has contracts with local authorities including Pembrokeshire County Council.

The business will now operate as Resources Management UK, trading as Potters Waste Management.

The move further strengthens Potter’s position in Wales following last year’s successful bid for a five year contract with Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council tto operate and manage household waste and recycling centres at Aberfan and Dowlais.

The company also operates household waste recycling centres at Welshpool, Newtown and Machynlleth on behalf of Powys County Council along with commercial waste transfer stations at Brecon and Welshpool.

The new contract will see Potters handling an additional 50,000 tonnes of waste and recycling per annum and protecting the jobs of the 40 staff at the 200 acre site at Rudbaxton.

“We are now Wales’ leading recycling and waste company offering integrated solutions in both the local authority and commercial sectors,” said Potter Group Managing Director James Potter.

“The acquisition is a very important step forward for the company enabling us to develop our business in South Wales.

“The site currently services Pembrokeshire County Council recycling centres and it is our intention to develop the infrastructure and attract business from a wider area

"The acquisition provides good facilities and brings a range of new clients to our fold. It also allows us to protect the jobs of the employees who have the local knowledge and expertise to help build our business in the area.

"There will be many opportunities to achieve future growth, with the security of a large landfill void.

“The transition of ownership will be as seamless as possible for all concerned and will enable the business to continue to develop."

Debbie Potter, Operations Director of the Potter Group, said: “We are delighted with the purchase and are really looking forward to working in close partnership with a new local authority and new customers.

“Through our own multi-purpose recycling infrastructure we can provide an industry leading one-stop shop for all sustainable waste management solutions.

“This new purchase is the perfect addition to the expanding footprint covered by the company’s waste recycling, treatment and disposal operations.”
