Waring memorial to be unveiled at Town Hall

05/12/2014 @ 07:28
The life of a Welshpool Victoria Cross holder is to be marked at the Town Hall and members of his family will attend the unveiling of a commemorative display tomorrow (Saturday).

William Waring died in the battle in Ronssoy, France in 1918 during the First World War and was awarded the VC for his actions. He had already been awarded the Military Medal whilst serving in Palestine a year earlier.
Now Welshpool Town Council is to mark the life of the soldier who served in the 25th Batallion of the Royal Welch Fusiliers.
Welshpool Town Council will also erect a stone marking Mr Waring’s life on the outside of the Town Hall. An unveiling ceremony for the stone takes place on January 10.

Lance Sergeant Waring led an attack against enemy machine guns and in the face of devastating fire single handed rushed a strong-point, bayoneting four of the garrison and capturing 20 with their guns. He then reorganised his men, leading and inspiring them for another 400 yards before falling mortally wounded.

The stone to be erected next month relates to Royal "Welsh" Fusiliers, rather than Royal "Welch" because the unit was re-named as "Welsh" during the First World War years.
