‘One last push’ to save Welshpool Air Ambulance base in 2024

26/12/2023 @ 01:02

After it was revealed that it will be well into 2024 before we find out the fate of Welshpool’s Air Ambulance base, local political figures have issued a rallying call for the area to prepare for one last fight.

It was expected that a preferred option would be revealed at a meeting on December 21, but an eleventh-hour intervention by Llais, an independent statutory body set up by the Welsh Government to give the people of Wales much more say in planning and delivery of health and social care services, requesting further public consultation, means it could be the spring now before we know.

It has sparked a fierce local reaction from fed up campaigners who want the base to stay in Welshpool, rather than move to North East Wales.

Montgomeryshire MP Craig Williams said: “Whilst an extension to the current Welshpool base was agreed until 2026, the future is not assured past then.

“Following the Emergency Ambulance Services Committee meeting this week, we are still awaiting news on the recommendation of the Chief Air Ambulance Commissioner.

“I’m grateful to all local people and campaigners for their tireless efforts to save Welshpool’s base. It now seems we must have one more big push at making our case to keep the Welshpool base open in the new year.”

Plaid Cymru’s Elwyn Vaughan will be up against Mr Williams for the local seat at the next General Election in 2024, and he said: “The public have made their views clear and support Option 6 which I on behalf of Plaid Cymru presented as a viable option.

“Thus, keeping Welshpool and Caernarfon bases, use split shifts and place a new Rapid Response Vehicle in the North East to serve G;yndwr/Wrecsam/Shotton etc. Let’s ensure this happens in the New Year.”

Montgomeryshire MS, Russell George, has also issued a Festive call to keep fighting. He said. “Disappointment, frustration, and concern has been the overwhelming reaction of local people at the original plans to close Welshpool’s critical Air Ambulance base.

“Over the last 18 months, a campaign to save the base has united our community because of how vital this service is for our area.

“As we move into 2024, we are expecting further information about when the final decision on the future of Wales Air Ambulance bases will be made, and we are now told that there will be a shortlist of options in February.

“Both Craig Williams MP and I have a clear view. The case for closing Welshpool’s base is flawed, trust locally has been undermined and the current operation must remain open.”
