Winter Festival organisers avoid Guilsfield clash

Welshpool’s Winter Festival and switching on of the Christmas lights will move weekends this year to avoid another successful local event.

While widely perceived as being a success this year, councillors at the latest Town Council Events Committee meeting said that 2024 Festival should avoid clashing again with another successful event that was held in Guilsfield on the same day.

The village has set in stone its 2024 edition for the last Saturday in November, booking a number of stall holders already, so councillors are keen not to clash.

Cllr Billy Spencer was particularly complimentary of both events, but said holding them on the same day was not a way forward to grow Welshpool’s over future years. He also urged the Town Council to avoid clashing with the Christmas Market held at the Livestock Market which is the first weekend in December.

“Our's was a fantastic event and every year it is important to build on it and improve,” said Cllr Spencer.

But identifying a date proved tricky with the weekend of December 14 deemed too close to Christmas, and the November 23 slot thought to be too early and too close to events commemorating Remembrance Day. Moving to a Sunday, or back to a Friday night was also ruled out.

After considerable debate, councillors agreed to push 2024’s event back to December 7, avoiding Guilsfield but clashing with the Livestock Market, making it two big events to be held in the town on the same day.
