Welshpool Air Ambulance base decision shambles

02/02/2024 @ 09:05

The process to decide whether Welshpool’s Air Ambulance base will close has taken a shambolic turn, with campaigners being urged to launch one last bid to save it.

Political leaders and key campaigners met yesterday with the man leading the engagement process and despite last week’s information that the two main options proposed would see the base close, Stephen Harrhy said that he has yet to make his recommendations.

Instead, the Chief Ambulance Service Commissioner reassured campaigners that his recommendations would be made after the third, and final, round of consultation launched this week, and running until February 29.

It was obvious that campaign fatigue had set in during the second engagement process with poor attendance at public meetings, but the message is loud and clear from campaign HQ that the base can still be saved, and we need to support it in numbers.

Lead campaigner Cynthia Duce published last night: “Following our meeting today with Stephen Harrhy, the Wales Ambulance Services Commissioner, he assured us that he had made no recommendation and that he does not yet have one.

“His final recommendations will be made during March. Stephen Harrhy was clear in his view this was not a done deal.

“Our plea to you is to ensure you make your voice heard and respond to the final phase by the end of this month. Mr Harrhy was keen to press the importance of this questionnaire.

“He also reassured us of the independence of this process, and told us that the ‘preferred’ options, A and B, were not perfect options and would welcome any additional feedback on these and other options equally.”

The meeting was attended by Craig Williams MP, Russell George MS, Cllr Elwyn Vaughan, Cllr Graham Breeze, Cllr Joy Jones, Clive Duce, Cynthia Duce and Bob Benyon.

The questionnaire can be viewed here.
