New twist to Town Council’s 50th celebrations

As the debate over a potential event to celebrate 50 years of Welshpool Town Council rumbled on this week, it was revealed last night that a stand-alone bash has been arranged by local historian and event organiser, Alan Crowe, for April.

Past town councillors got in touch with us after reading yesterday’s story about a potential event being organised by the Town Council to say they had already been invited to one.

Mr Crowe has sent out invitations on behalf of ‘Memories of Welshpool Project’ for a ‘reunion of former councillors and staff members’ on April 7 in the Town Hall’s Corn Exchange.

The invitation, shared with MyWelshpool, said the event is to “celebrate the 50th anniversary of Welshpool Town Council”.

This week at the council chamber, it was revealed that MyWelshpool’s story written from the minutes of an Events and Tourism meeting had “gone down like a led balloon”, according to Cllr Richard Church.

But Cllr Billy Spencer said that the story has been misrepresented due to the mention of a black-tie event, and he hoped his small working group could organise something to celebrate “all walks of life” in the town.

He said: “At the end of the day, every single person here, and many before us, have given up their time for free every week and sacrificed time with their children and families to come and do this under lots of scrutiny, so I think the least we can do is hold some kind of event which actually celebrates all that.”

The working group will report back to council next month on a potential Town Council-organised event.
