As knife crime continues to blight the UK, a call has been made to banish illegal blades from the streets of Welshpool and surrounding areas.
An amnesty across Montgomeryshire has been called by Dyfed-Powys Police who confirmed that the ‘zombie-style’ knives and machetes will become illegal from September 24.
From that day, it will be illegal to own zombie-style knives and machetes as they are added to the list of dangerous prohibited items already banned, including butterfly knives, Samurai swords and push daggers.
“Ahead of the new ban coming into force, anyone who has one of these weapons is being urged to hand them over – safely and legally,” said a spokesperson.
The surrender scheme will allow people to hand in knives that fall within the new legislation at police stations, in return for an application for compensation.
The scheme runs for four weeks between August 26-September 23, without repercussions for surrendering the potentially dangerous knives safely.
The nearest place for people to drop in the knives safely is Newtown Police Station (SY16 1EN).
Anyone making a compensation claim can do so at the point of surrendering the weapon at Newtown and it will be forwarded on to the Home Office to be processed.
After September 24, anyone caught with a zombie-style knife, or a machete could face time behind bars.
