Welshpool fire alert over BBQ hazard in public spaces

16/05/2025 @ 11:18

With the temptation to fire up the BBQ on Welshpool’s glorious public spaces, the Town Council is asking residents to take care.

Wildfires are breaking out across the region and, with the dry spell continuing, the warning comes for the town’s residents to take care, particularly when using disposable barbecues.

Richard Williams, Town Clerk, said the Town Council was responsible for 64 acres of recreational and multi-purpose space and added: “We want everyone to enjoy our beautiful parks and open spaces safely, but we’re all aware how quickly a fire can take hold in these conditions, and disposable BBQs are a key risk. We’re asking everyone to do their bit to protect our green spaces.”

Fire chiefs have also been warning BBQ’ers on the dangers of disposable barbecues which can pose a serious threat even after the flames have gone out.

Welshpool Town Council’s range of land includes Maes y Dre, Burgess Lands, Country Park and Powis Castle Lower Park.

If you see smoke or an unattended fire in any green space, call 999 immediately.
