Town Council to broadcast tonight’s meeting live on YouTube

For the first time tonight, a Welshpool Town Council meeting will be livestreamed on YouTube, meaning anyone can access wherever they may be in the world.

The move is part of a push by the authority to become more transparent and to enable members of the general public to observe meetings and witness how decisions concerning the town are made.

Recently, the Town Council has been criticised due to the number of sensitive topics that are discussed in confidential sessions, when press and public are excluded, which is their right to do so, of course.

Among the topics being discussed at tonight’s full council meeting from 6.30pm is the election of the Mayor and Deputy Mayor.

Councillors will also discuss whether they will accept the allowances that, by law, they have to receive unless they opt out. In Welshpool, all councillors currently opt out and do the role for free as volunteers.
