Welshpool boy racer cars “are road worthy”

Dyfed-Powys Police have responded to concerns that so called ‘boy racers’ are causing havoc in Welshpool by confirming that they are “monitoring the situation”.

However, the force has added that during a recent blitz on anti-social driving in the town, all cars that were stopped were road worthy, despite complaints that loud exhausts were keeping town centre residents up until the early hours.

Readers have contacted us recently to complain that the town centre was being used as a race track and there were cars congregating in Berriew Street Car Park causing issues.

The Town Council has also voiced its concern in recent meetings, calling for action, so we shared those concerns with Dyfed-Powys Police who responded to us last night.

Sergeant Lloyd Mayor said: “The Neighbourhood and Preventative Policing Team are aware of the concerns of the community in Welshpool regarding anti-social driving.

“A planned operation to tackle the issue was successfully conducted recently in collaboration with the Roads Policing Team, where officers engaged with many drivers.

“The legality of cars present was checked by traffic officers, and some minor faults detected (tyre tread depth requirements not quite met), but the cars were suitable for the road.

“The police presence on that evening was quickly acknowledged and led to cars no longer driving through the town, which then allowed officers present to respond to a call regarding an incident.

“The Neighbourhood and Preventative Policing Team will continue to monitor the situation and will work with the local community to deal with any further issues.”
