Welshpool residents could be missing out on financial help

More than 700 adults in Powys, including many in the Welshpool area,  could be missing out on thousands of pounds in financial support, according to Powys County Council.

The council is urging residents with long-term health conditions or disabilities to check if they are eligible for Personal Independence Payment (PIP). This government benefit could be worth several thousand pounds a year.

Using a data system known as the Low Income Family Tracker (LIFT), the council has identified over 700 working-age residents receiving either Universal Credit or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) who are classed as having ‘Limited Capability for Work-Related Activity’ – but who are not currently claiming PIP.

Letters will be sent to those identified over the coming weeks, explaining PIP and offering help to apply.

“If you have a long-term health condition, or disability, and need help with everyday tasks or getting around, then you could be eligible for PIP,” said Councillor Matthew Dorrance, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for a Fairer Powys. “We are here to help, and want to make sure that everyone is receiving all the financial help they are entitled to – especially households with children. More than 200 of these letters will be going to parents or adults who care for a child in Powys.”

PIP is available to people who struggle with daily tasks or mobility due to a long-term physical or mental condition. Unlike some other benefits, it can be claimed even if you are working, have savings, or are already receiving other support.

In June, the council used the LIFT platform to identify nearly 900 households potentially facing financial difficulties due to the rising cost of living. Those households were contacted with offers of support, which is still available.

Help includes advice on benefits and entitlements, managing bills and debt, and tailored financial guidance. Support is offered online, over the phone, or in person, including at home visits.
