Jackson Quarréll has been elected as the new Welshpool town councillor for the Llanerchyddol Ward, fending off a challenge from the town's 'clean-up minion', Kelly Meredith.

Mr Quarréll received 120 votes, 28 more than Ms Meredith who was trying to become a town councillor for the eighth time.

“I love the town and if elected would hope to be able to get to know more of you better and be better able to help sort things out and keep everyone in the loop,” he said, on the eve of yesterday's election.

Richard John White came in third with 17 votes.

It was another disappointing turn out with just 15.5% of eligible voters casting their vote (229 of 1,474 electors, as of April 1), with 107 by post and 122 in person.

Who is Jackson Quarréll?

Jackson Quarréll has lived in Welshpool since he was 18 and has worked in retail all that time (Safeway, One Stop, Post Office, Tesco Mobile).

He said that he “loves meeting people, getting to know the whole community and hopefully being able to help people sort stuff out”.

“I love the town and if elected would hope to be able to get to know more of you better and be better able to help sort things out and keep everyone in the loop,” he said.

“While out canvassing I came across many issues from tree felling to waste collection, parking to better paths, road safety to more places for young people to go.

“I do not promise I can solve all of these concerns but I will share all the information so those doing the planning can know what people want and all of us can know what is being done and why.

“I have always loved bringing people together and believe it’s vital to listen to everyone as you never know who might share the next great idea to help all of our lives.”
