Newtown’s direct bus link to south Wales is set for a major upgrade, with Transport for Wales confirming a new timetable for the TrawsCymru T4 service from today (Monday).
Operated by Llanidloes-based Celtic Travel, the T4 has been a vital transport link for over 14 years, connecting the town with Brecon, Merthyr Tydfil and destinations in between. From September, passengers travelling from Newtown will benefit from improved frequency and a simplified fares structure, according to TFW.
The new timetable will see T4 buses running every two hours between Newtown and Brecon from Monday to Saturday. Connections from Brecon south to Merthyr will increase to an hourly service on weekdays and Saturdays, while a Sunday service every two hours will continue, with extra journeys added during the summer peak.
The upgrade is part of Transport for Wales’ plans to improve reliability and value across the TrawsCymru network.
Lee Robinson, Executive Director for Regional Transport and Integration at Transport for Wales, said: “We’re excited to launch the enhanced T4 service with Celtic Travel. These improvements will offer greater flexibility and value for passengers, and the partnership model shows how regional operators can successfully collaborate to deliver high-quality public transport.”
Phyl Davies, Managing Director at Celtic Travel, added: “We’re proud to be taking on the T4 service and look forward to working closely with Transport for Wales to deliver a high-quality, dependable service. The new timetable and fare structure will offer greater flexibility and value for passengers, and we’re excited about the arrival of new vehicles next year to further enhance the journey experience.”
New vehicles are due to join the route in March 2026, promising greater comfort and improved environmental performance.
Meanwhile, changes south of Merthyr will see Stagecoach launch a new X4 service to Cardiff, while Transport for Wales is developing integrated ticketing to support smoother travel across road and rail.
The upgraded T4 timetable comes into effect from Monday, 1 September 2025.
