A “massive issue” with Burgess Lands allotments

Filling the town’s empty allotments is proving a challenge to the Town Council, it has been revealed.

Welshpool has two locations, by the hospital (pictured last year) and at the Burgess Lands on Red Bank, but while the former is nearly full, there appears to be problems with the latter.

At the latest Operations & Development Committee meeting, Town Clerk, Richard Williams, said the situation needed to be addressed with a plan in place to fill them up.

“There are empty spaces, in particularly at Burgess Lands where there is a massive issue with the ground up there. We will strim them back when it is a bit quieter," he said.

“The hospital site is not full completely. Basically, it’s another one on our list that we need to publicise, especially with the increasing number of flats in the town as people don’t have the gardens.”

Only a year ago it was reported at a council meeting that the allotments were approaching full capacity, so this latest update came as a susprise.

Back in 2021, the Town Council was criticised for spending around £23,000 on their allotments due to an expectation to have them in place by the Welsh Government.
