Push for First Minister to visit Montgomeryshire amidst “healthcare crisis”

17/09/2025 @ 11:14

A local county councillor is calling on the First Minister, Eluned Morgan, and Secretary for Health, Jeremy Miles, to visit the area to hear about our dire health system first hand.

For years, Montgomeryshire has felt like the forgotten area of Wales when it comes to health care, with patients having to travel across county borders to places like Shrewsbury (pictured) to receive treatment.

It is set to be a major topic for next year’s Welsh Government elections, and last night a petition was launched by Cllr Joy Jones, the anti-poverty champion on Powys County Council, who says enough is enough.

She has launched a petition and is calling on everyone with an interest in the current state of health service delivery to sign.

Her petition calls on Ms Morgan and Mr Miles MS to “meet directly with the public they represent and hear first-hand the devastating impact of our collapsing healthcare system”.

“The consequences of this crisis are not just medical – they are social, economic, and deeply personal. People are losing their health, their livelihoods, and their dignity. The Welsh Government’s failure to ensure parity with the rest of the UK is treating Powys residents as second-class citizens,” she said, adding that she wants the pair to “take responsibility for addressing this crisis”.

“This petition is our collective voice,” she said. “We are not statistics. We are families, carers, patients, and citizens who deserve better. We will not be sidelined. We will not be silenced. Sign now to demand justice, dignity, and action for Powys.”
