Council promises better adult social care services

Plans to transform adult social care in Powys have been announced by the county council, with promises of better services and outcomes for residents. But the proposals come at a time when growing demand and financial pressures continue to stretch already limited resources.

The review of Adult Services highlighted the need for earlier intervention in the community to prevent crises, more support at home to help people remain independent, and new approaches to enable both older and working-age adults to live at home for longer.

Powys County Council says it consulted with staff, service users, and partners to shape the proposals. However, no detail has yet been given on how the changes will be funded, or how quickly residents could expect to see improvements.

Cllr Sian Cox, Cabinet Member for a Caring Powys, said the aim was to support people to “live their best possible life” by focusing on independence, choice, and making greater use of technology.

The council’s next stage will be to implement changes based on initiatives such as Extra Care housing and new daytime opportunities. Officials say these will promote choice, connection, and independence.

Adult social care remains one of the biggest financial pressures on the council, and critics are likely to question whether the transformation can meet rising demand without further strain on budgets. The coming months will show whether the ambitions outlined can be delivered in practice.
