Jurassic lark as dinosaurs head for Llanfair railway

25/09/2025 @ 12:00

The animals around the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway will be just a little wilder over the weekend of October 4-5 as the popular mid-Wales heritage railway stages its first Dinosaur Weekend.

The family-themed event promises fun activities at Welshpool Raven Square and Llanfair Caereinion stations alongside the line’s highly popular heritage train rides.

Saturday, October 4 will be aimed at the littlest explorers, who will be encouraged to unleash their inner palaeontologists and help find the golden dinosaur bone. There will be a dinosaur trail and roar-some Dino art in the marquee at Llanfair Careinion station, with visitors’ Dino creations helping to populate the Jurassic backdrop.

Visitors will also be able to relax with dinosaur story books, and enjoy some terrific tearoom treats.

Sunday, October 5 will see visitors able to climb aboard the Extinct Express for a Jurassic journey through the mid-Wales countryside. As they travel through the beautiful Banwy Valley they will be able to meet baby dinosaurs and their rangers up close. Please note that the dinosaur visitors will be present on Sunday only.

Standard ticket fares apply on both days of the event but booking is highly recommended to ensure visitors don’t miss out. Tickets for either day can be booked on the railway’s website, www.wllr.org/events/dinosaur-weekend/
